Lady of the Woods

It was around Halloween time and I felt a need to draw something...Halloweeny. Since most of my art work already includes monsters and zombies, I decided to go for something a bit more traditional. This witch isn't meant to be frightening as so much mysterious. Coming across her in the forest would most likely be a friendly interaction. Following her to her home or offering to help carry some things could lead to riskier circumstances. Some witches are good, some are bed. A few witches just like to meddle in your life and alter your circumstances.

A few things to note: The shadow on the face because of the hood gave too much contrast in that area. That shadow should have been carried out into the piece. The lighting was intended to be more ambient. I love her mismatched shoes. Other than that I tried to give her an old fashioned, slightly scrappy look. Not to fear, but to spark more curiosity.

Golbin Brute: Penciled Shadows

Penciling in the block shadows to prepare for inking. Always helps to clean up and have a little bit more of a guide. Goblin Brute: Ink'd is next in the set.

Goblin Brute: Line Work

This is a line drawing of my Goblin Brute. I have a special place in my heart for goblins. I like their classic look with serious spins. I adapted a pose for this drawing from another pencil drawing of Batman, done by another artist. After altering the pose slightly I had something stronger to work with. You can see faint lines of repositioning and erase marks from areas that took a lot of struggle for me to get right. I expected this to be more of an inked piece of art, so I fixed it later.

The concept for this comes from the idea of a hearty, thicker goblins who are assigned in pairs to be guards. Trained from a younger age these goblins are cruel best friends with their fellow brute companions. Most often they are out in front of the camps, hidden in the rocks or canyons. They fall upon lone travelers or small groups to steal and collect items they want or the clan needs. When numbers are too overwhelming or a threat is posed to the camp, brutes will blow their horns and warn fellow goblins. They are ver cocky, but relentless and greedy are the most noted attributes. One on one combat would not be fun, and you better pray you don't have anything shiny!

Next in set: Goblin Brute: Penciled Shadows

Locust Grenadier

A quicker piece in my sketchbook. Fan art from Gears of War. This character is my most famous choice while enjoying multiplayer with my friends. He is more commonly known to us as "Shirtless Joe" or often "The shirtless guy is Kessler." So naturally I equipped him with my favorite arsenal, a boltok pistol and a frag grenade (explosives and headshots? who could as for anything more?). I am also most often seen with these weapons in hand as well.

The scales and bracer work was really fun in this one. The Grenadier doesn't usually sport bracers, but I thought they added a nice detailed touch. The scaling was a tad meticulous but nothing too difficult. In the end it gave him a lot more texture. The hand and angle on the pistol were extremely difficult. I still don't feel like I gave it justice, but it turned out looking much more natural than the original sketches and attempts. Capturing the face is hard on these guys, but I gave it a good effort. Enjoy the Fan Art!

Clan of the Plagued Goblet

This concept was inspired by a love of zombification and orcs. My friend Blake and I were talking. His affection for the Orcs and my affection for the undead sparked a meeting in the middle. To develop the idea I started with a few different positions. I wanted a multi subject drawing, which I need a lot of work on doing, which forced me to experiment a little. I decided to use lighting to help draw in a couple figures. This was a difficult decision of how to lay it out, but the orc "chieftain" with the goblet needed to be the center of attention.

Concept: A clan of orcs discovered the goblet long ago. The clan has since chosen their strongest greenskin to hold the goblet. It was promised in the legend to bring them immortality. It has but the goblet also comes with a curse to plague the bearers. Each orc drinks from the goblet to gain immortality. Some decay faster than others, the strong can resist a lot of the affects. The go, bearing the emblem of the goblet reaping down foes and bringing death as they go.

A few things to note:
The maggots falling out of his wound, the cockroach in his skin and the millipede crawling on his shoulder area. The raven on the head is one of my favorites parts as well.
That is it. I have been horrible about keeping up this blog. I have done art and a few projects over this semester of college. Nothing from art classes, but I would like to add some sketch pages too. I am going to go scan things RIGHT NOW after I complete writing this post.

Update on conceptualizing: Most of my ideas have filled up sketch books, I haven't quite done as much finished work as I could have been doing. Despite that I need to make some work based out of these ideas.

Hey Everyone!

A scanner still isn't available! I'll have one at school in a couple weeks and I will get back on track with keeping a concept on the board! I have had a lot of ideas since my last post, but I was quite busy doing art for other people. Recently, I have thought about what ways I can practice my art skills. I love conceptualizing new creatures, forming new beasts, and designing my own armor, but I think some fan art would be in order. Perhaps once a month, or by request I can start with some regular fan art.

I do need to be drawing everyday ,and working to improve my abilities or understand areas that are in need of improvement. Unfortunately, in school, I really don't have an applied arts class and I may have to drop my art class in order to get work. I'm looking forward to the day where my art can truly grow so much more than what it is now.

Thanks for all those who follow. I'll try to keep new posts up!

Spleen Creature

Just letting everyone know I had a lot of other artwork to do this week, I finished my monster this weekend but I am having scanner issues! Don't Worry, It will be there soon!

Thanks!

The drawing is lost. I cannot find it. The creature was based on the idea of being quite small, almost tick like. Pretty much a single bloated bean shaped body with a mouth and eyes. Long climbing claws are attached to lanky but taught limbs. No more than the size of a large rat makes it a vicious agile creature. One is large enough to suck pints of blood from a human, in groups they are extremely deadly draining life force from their victim. When full, quite easy to dispatch of...minus the large mess off course.

Undead Steed

UNDEAD STEED

This weeks monster is a zombified stallion. The concept mainly arose by thinking of many games, novels or movies where a character rides a notable mount. A necromancer style character came to mind. I thought to myself about different steeds a necromancer could use. In all honesty, a flesh weaver of sorts could stitch any parts together to make any mount he wanted. At first this made me think a horse was a lame choice but I thought through it. Perhaps there is more professionalism in riding an equine breed rather than...lets say... a rhino half stitched to an elephant with a hint of giraffe. A flying mount crossed my mind but lets be honest, without a parachute or safety features flying mounts can take a very long time to master. There will be a time and place, probably for a spectre style piece instead, where there isn't much of a physical body to worry about being dropped from high in the air.

So I settled on a horse. I went zombie because every horse that is evil tends to just have red eyes or is skeletal. One could argue horses are too "pretty" or "elegant" to be a zombie. Well.. too bad. The image in my head was a winner, disgusting as it was. My thinking process started with antlers and more hoofed animal accessories. It just wasn't working so I changed to horns, believable and balanced rather than obnoxious and heavy (Yes zombies have strange capabilities of strength, but no need to weigh down a horse!). As I detailed the rest of it, I stuck with a theme of random growing horns, plenty of rot, and some stitching. Oh, and the occasional boils. The saddle was sort of inspired by an old horse drawn coach, of the 1800's. I wanted something more antique looking and less cowboy.

A few fun details to note on this piece. For pure irony I broke this horse front leg, which is held together by wrappings. For those who don't know, once a horse leg is broken it's a goner. This necromancer took a very healthy horse because it just happened to have a fatal accident. I also hide my symbol of my initials in every piece, a "k" and "g" that are combined together to form one letter of sorts. (this one is easy to find). And the face on the rump was a last minute and unexpected touch.

That is it for the week! I'll have another one coming soon!

Starting My Blog

Well I have never even dreamed of starting a blog! I wanted to start this up because I felt the need to get my concept art and creative mind out in the internet. Too often have I designed something, created an image, or built some monster and no one is there to see it or understand my thinking process. I'm happy to begin, but not sure where to start. Once I understand how this blog thing works, I'm sure I might fall in love with the idea of talking about my self. My very own diary! I'll be trying to put up a new piece of concept art, with descriptions about every detail, every week. Some might be a sketch or other pieces could be in color.

Here is a picture of my handsome self and an art sample that gives one an idea of what I have in that brain of mine...

 And here we go... ENJOY!
